Access Services - Creating Better Ways To Serve People With Special Needs
Fighting Hunger in Zambia
In Ndola, Zambia, unemployment is highly prevalent and the situation is not improving. The Zambian economy is suffering and jobs are simply not available. Some urban areas even have an unemployment rate as high as 90%. In addition to unemployment, Zambia has had to confront the realities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic that has left behind many orphans and widows with no means of earning a living. With the country in crisis and so many challenges, hunger is rampant and the Zambian people are in desperate need of sustenance.
This is the reality that Pastor Barney Mulenga with Bible Way Ministries, a local pastor in Ndola, Zambia, is forced to confront everyday. Barney is our contact in Ndola, Zambia. Together with Access Services, he has dedicated himself to improving the lives of orphans and widows who suffer in Ndola. Pastor Barney has worked for 11 years as a pastor, without receiving any salary. He cares for twelve people in his household, three of which are his children. Sadly, the other people he cares for at his home are the orphaned children of his deceased siblings, a direct result of the tragic HIV/Aids pandemic in Africa. We are happy to partner with Pastor Barney as he works tirelessly to serve those in his community.
In an effort to assist Pastor Barney and local residents reduce hunger and its subsequent effects, we have helped them establish a poultry and egg production business. Donations to this cause and money earned from the business can be used to build a much needed poultry house. The chickens can be utilized as both a food source and as a financial investment, as the business eventually becomes self-sufficient.
The development of a viable business for Pastor Barney is an investment in the local community for long-term sustainability— helping to create jobs and stimulate the local economy— but it will also help increase the amount of support given to local HIV/AIDS orphans. This effort, however, only touches the surface of a devastating epidemic. Please consider sponsoring a child, which will help provide for basic needs such as food, clothing and water.
