Access Services Participates in Freedom March
A group of Access Services
staff members and consumers went to Harrisburg on Tuesday, April 29th to take
part in the annual Freedom March. This march is organized annually by "Speaking
for Ourselves", a statewide, consumer-run, advocacy group. This is a time
when people with disabilities and their friends can unite to bring important
issues and concerns to our State representatives. These issues (related to the
Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA) include the freedom of access for all
people into public buildings, equal employment opportunity and to participate
in civic and community activities without discrimination. Other issues advocated
by this group relate to the condition of services and supports for people with
disabilities.
The current state budget
has resulted in services being cut or maintained at existing levels. This affects
people on waiting lists for service who are in great need of help. Of course,
direct care salaries are an ongoing concern for people receiving services and
for the agencies that support them. The Access Services group participated in
events that took place on the rotunda at the capital. There were various speakers
representing the people and advocating for their needs. It was an enthusiastic
group and the turn out was great!
Staff members, Sue Steege,
Tim Schumacher, Diana Blade, and Brenda Boorse accompanied Jose Colon, served
through the Access Services' Starting Point program, who was eager to participate
and carry a sign encouraging freedom for people with disabilities still in institutions
and not living full lives in the community. Jose was so excited about this day
he stated that he wanted to participate in other marches maybe even in Washington,
D.C. Other consumers, Colette Nasielski cheered along with the group and Ken
Silver from the Access Services' Lifesharing program wore the yellow ribbon
on his wheelchair representing the rights of people with disabilities. The trip
was fun for everyone, including the adventure of going to Harrisburg for the
first time, seeing the town, eating lunch out and experiencing the beauty of
the capital building in the Spring when so many trees and flowers are in full
blossom.
Access Services is dedicated to serving and enhancing the lives of children
and adults with special challenges by providing planned and creative supports
in their homes and communities. The children served by Access Services come
from various backgrounds with behavioral and emotional tendencies. The adults
served have developmental disabilities and are in need of community involvement.
